For those flying commercially to and from South Florida, it used to be that Palm Beach International Airport was the one commercial airport in the area that was a breeze to get in and out of. Compared to the much busier Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport and Miami International Airport, the Palm Beach International Airport was a preferred option for many, despite their limited availability in flights.
Since President Donald Trump has begun making routine weekend visits to his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, the travel situation at Palm Beach International Airport has changed significantly. Due to heightened security, TFRs (Temporary Flight Restrictions) have disrupted plans of travelers that are traveling to, from, or through the Palm Beach International Airport.
What it Means When the TFR is in Effect
Flying to PBI when a TFR is in effect can mean a great deal of hassles and travel delays. Any plane flying to the airport will need to be screened at one of the following airports: Fort Lauderdale International Airport, Washington Dulles, Orlando International Airport, Westchester County, or Teterboro Airport. Unless you’re flying directly from one of these airports, this just means a long, frustrating day of travel.
On top of the TFR, travelers will also feel the effects of these changes whenever Runways 10R, 14, and 10L are active. It will also have a greater effect on planes arriving to Palm Beach from the east, and restricts business planes to Runway 32, which measures at 6,500 feet.
Other Options: Charter a Flight
With the TFR, many travelers are avoiding Palm Beach Airport altogether and instead flying to Miami and Fort Lauderdale, which are also now seeing more crowds than ever before. Although chartering a flight to Palm Beach Airport won’t offer any solutions due to the TFR affecting both charter and commercial flights, chartering a flight to a nearby airport can be just the answer you’re looking for. For example, Boca Raton Airport (BCT) is another charter airport in Palm Beach County, and located just a short distance from the Palm Beach International Airport.
