If you’re traveling to Cleveland, Ohio, you have a few choices for airports. One option for airports in Cleveland is the Cuyahoga County Airport, located just 12 miles east of downtown Cleveland.
The Cuyahoga County Airport, also known as Robert D. Shea Field, is a general aviation reliever airport for Cleveland Hopkins International Airport. It’s also a top choice for travelers flying to or from the Cleveland area by charter plane, and prefer a faster, simplified option.
The airport was initially developed in 1928, but it was in 1946 that Cuyahoga County purchased the airport. It wasn’t until 1991 that Aviation Administrator Robert D. Shea retired after 42 years, and the airport was renamed to Cuyahoga County Airport, Robert D. Shea Field as tribute.
The majority of aviation operations (80%) at the Cuyahoga County Airport in one recent year were general aviation operations. Almost a quarter of operations, 20% approximately, are air taxi operations. A very small percentage, often less than one percent each year, include military aircraft operations.
