Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport is located in Jefferson County in Kentucky, serving the Louisville area. Currently, it covers an area of 1,5000 acres, and it is a very busy airport. In addition to serving a substantial amount of passenger flights, because it is a port of entry, it handles many international cargo flights as well.
Although the airport was technically renamed in 2019, it is still commonly known as Louisville International Airport. It was recently renamed to honor the famed boxer Muhammad Ali, and the airport’s official name is now Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport. Initially, the airport was known as Standiford Field. It was named after Dr. Elisha David Standiford when it first began operations, a local politician and businessman, who owned part of the land that the airport was developed on. It wasn’t until 1947 that the airport was turned over to the Louisville Air Board and commercial airline flights began. Until that point, the Army controlled the airport’s operations.
