University Park Airport is a general aviation airport located near the borough of State College, Pennsylvania. The airport has been in operation since 1946 and it is owned by Penn State University as part of its University Park Airport Authority. The airport is situated three nautical miles north-northeast of the central business district of the borough.
University Park Airport was founded by the Penn State College of Engineering as a part of a research project. A hangar was built on January 1, 1946, and the airport was officially granted a license to operate by the state of Pennsylvania on July 2, 1946. In 1958, The Pennsylvania Department of Commerce assumed control of the airport. The Department continued to operate it, except from 1974 to 1994 when Penn State took control. In January 1995, the University Park Airport Authority was established and took over all responsibilities for the operation, management, and control of the airport.
