The Caribbean island of Antigua can make for the perfect weekend getaway. The following are some of the island’s highlights, which include a wide variety of choices to meet just about any traveler’s interests.

ValleyChurchBeach

For beaching

Antigua is home to 365 beaches – that’s one for every single day of the year. It can be difficult to decide which of the island’s beautiful beaches are worth a visit when your time is limited to just one weekend. Locals and travelers alike rave about Half Moon Bay, Deep Bay, Valley Church Beach, Galley Bay Beach, and Turner Bay, just to name a few. Prickly Pear Island is also another favorite, and is located just off the coast of main island. Antigua’s beaches are great for all kinds of watersports, but are also terrific spots to just kick back and relax.

If you’re looking for a quiet and secluded beach, try one of the four Hawksbill beaches–Eden Beach, Royal Palm Beach, Honeymoon Cove, or Sea Grape Beach–all of which offer more privacy than some of the other, more touristy beaches.

Events

There is never really a bad time of year to visit Antigua, but the island is known to host an abundance of fun events. One popular event that draws in visitors from around the world is the Antigua Carnival, which takes place every year from the end of July until the first Tuesday in August. In the spring, the island hosts its annual Antigua Sailing Week.

Shopping

During your weekend visit to Antigua, be sure to stop by St. John’s Saturday Morning Market: a true shopper’s paradise. Despite the name, Antigua’s bustling market is open both Friday and Saturday mornings.

Antigua Stingrays

For nature lovers

One of the island’s biggest attractions is Stingray City, where visitors can swim and snorkel with friendly, harmless stingrays. Nature lovers can also get up close and personal with wildlife at Wadadli Animal Nature Park, or stop by the island’s Donkey Sanctuary.

For active travelers

A hike up Boggy Peak (recently renamed to Mount Obama) offers splendid views of the island, or you can view some of Antigua’s most stunning rock formations (Pillars of Hercules, Hell’s Gate and Devil’s Bridge) from the water on an afternoon boat trip.

Where to stay

A few of the island’s top luxury beachfront resorts include Carlisle Bay, Jumby Bay, and Hermitage Bay.
